Operation Bluestar was conducted between 1st and 10th June 1984. It damaged the shrine extensively. The Sikhs were traumatized. The film is set in Delhi's east-side neighborhood of Trilokpuri and depicts a three-day period in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984, four months after Operation Blue Star. In the film, stories of the fictional characters center on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. It's a usual routine morning for Jogi's (Diljit Dosanjh) traditional working class Sikh family of three generations. Children get ready for school, women fry Parathas, and elders and men sit around the table and make jokes. They have no idea as to what is about to happen. By the time Jogi and his father Harpal Singh are on the bus to work, news of Indira Gandhi's assassination by her two Sikh bodyguards that morning, spreads. Jogi asks the men who begin to beat him and his father "what is our fault?" to which the reply is you are a Sardar.Over the following three days, Sikhs are scapegoated, and scenes depict pockets of violence towards them. They are recognized by their distinct appearances and by their names on the electoral register, propagated by the Trilokpuri MLA Tejpal Arora (Kumud Mishra). Tejpal announces a bounty of Rs 1000 for every Sardar killed. Rs 5000 for every eminent Sikh. He orders the police to supply kerosene oil, country guns and swords to his kill squads. Any loot is also the killer's bonus. He also orders the police to stand down for the next 3 days.
Jogi's brother-in-law is beaten as he opens his shop and burned alive. Mobs of people run down the streets and burn buildings. A man in a turban is shown running and on fire shouting for help, a Sikh family in a car are burned.Jogi returns home to find an empty house and his neighbors are cutting their children's hair in the hope that they will not be recognized. When Jogi reaches his sister's Heer (Charu Kumar) house, he sees Sukhi (Apinderdeep Singh) (Jogi's elder brother) along with other family members sitting and crying around Heer who is stitching a shirt on the suing machine for her dead husband Tejinder (K.P. Singh). Jogi consoles his sister and watching this, Sukhi who is already in deep shock, cannot bear the pain of his sister and he breaks down.
Rawinder (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), Jogi's Hindu friend and police officer, sees Jogi's family name on the target list (distributed by Tejpal) and advises him to leave for Punjab. However, Jogi vows to help not just his own family but his whole Sikh community. The Sikh families of Trilokpuri have taken refuge inside the Gurudwara. Jogi creates a plan to defend the shrine against attacks and mobilizes his resources.Following an intensely emotional scene where he cuts his long hair, Rawinder and his Muslim friend Kaleem (Paresh Pahuja), help him with his mission. Kaleem has a trucking business and agrees to modify his trucks to hide all the Sikhs inside them and transport them out of Delhi, and into Punjab. He creates a secret compartment inside his trucks to hide people. The first truck is filled with elders and kids and sent on its way. The back of the truck is filled with arms and ammunition to make it look like it is transporting materials to support the killings. Rawinder escorts the truck, while Jogi drives it.
The fuel pumps across the city are dry as all fuel has been diverted to Tejpal's supply farm, which is being used to distribute arson materials across Delhi. Rawinder and Jogi are forced to go to the farm to secure fuel for their truck. Tejpal authorizes the fuel but warns Rawinder that he has not made progress in Trilokpuri in killing the Sikhs. Based on an info from another police officer Katiyal/Laali, Tejpal orders Rawinder to burn down the area of Trilokpuri where the Sikhs are hiding.Rawinder and Jogi hide the truck outside the city and return to Trilokpuri to burn down the lane where Sikhs were suspected to be hiding. Rawinder says this is necessary to save the rest.
Later, they get back to the truck and drive it to Karnal border. The border post won't allow the truck to pass without checking it. The outpost officers insist on checking the truck and discover the hidden compartment. Rawinder and Jogi attack them and escape with the truck.
The officers report the matter to Katiyal/Laali. Katiyal suspects that this is Jogi and Rawinder, and he reports the matter to Tejpal. By morning the truck reaches Mohali, and one batch is saved.Day 2 in Delhi. Tejpal meets Rawinder at his residence, where Laali accuses him of helping the Sikhs escape. Jogi is leader of the lane which was ordered to be burnt down. Tejpal orders Rawinder to bring him Jogi's dead body. In private, Rawinder tells Laali that he will not allow Jogi to be harmed. Laali reveals that he knows that Rawinder is helping the Sikhs escape. Rawinder says that is the police's job, to protect the innocent. Laali orders the sealing of Trilokpuri.
Rawinder tells Tejpal that all the Sikhs are hiding inside the Gurudwara and asks for all surrounding forces to attack there. When they attack, they find the Gurudwara empty and Laali realizes that this was Rawinder's ploy to break the sealing and allow the Sikhs to escape.Laali finds out the trucks were supplied by Kaleem. The Sikhs are hiding in Kaleem's mosque. Laali meets Kaleem's wife Shehnaaz (Noyrika) and finds a huge food container being prepared in her home. He figures that she is preparing food for the Sikhs hiding in the mosque. Kaleem and Jogi were hiding in the house and know that Laali has figured this out. They reach the mosque moments before Laali arrives with his forces and manages to escape with everyone.Laali tracks them down and points a gun at Jogi. A brief flashback explains Laali's (Hiten Tejwani) vendetta with Jogi after Kammo's (Amyra Dastur) suicide. 3 yrs ago, Kammo (Laali's sister) was in love with Jogi. They both studied in DU. They have sex. When Jogi gets a job, he decides to approach Laali to ask for Kammo's hand in marriage. But he finds Kammo dead. Laali reveals that the previous evening Kammo fell sick, and the doctor revealed she is pregnant. Kammo admits that it is Jogi's child. He wants Kammo to marry a boy of his choice in 2 days, but Kammo refuses. Kammo commits suicide. Laali blames Jogi, whom he trusted like his brother.
In the present, Laali spares Jogi. Jogi claims that he cared for his friendship much more than his love. He begs Laali not to punish the innocent.Jogi & Rawinder decide to hide everyone in the Trilokpuri jail. Rawinder smuggles them into the jail via a secret entrance. The group is hidden in the basement. Tejpal arrives at the police station and captures Jogi and Rawinder. Tejpal wants to know where the Sikhs of Trilokpuri are hiding.
As Jogi refuses to divulge anything, the standoff ends with the death of Jogi from a shot by Tejpal just moments after his community are saved by the Indian Army, brought in unexpectedly by Laali.
